First Garden Cities Homes (FGCH) was formed on 1st March 2020 following the amalgamation of Howard Cottage Housing Association (HCHA) and Welwyn Garden City Housing Association (WGCHA).
As well as their own unique interests and identities, each organisation brings to the amalgamation a very successful track record of delivering high quality housing. With a combined 170 year history, there is a wealth of experience and knowledge of the housing sector, as well as a shared commitment to build on these strong foundations.
HCHA was formed in 1911 and named after it's founder, Sir Ebenezer Howard. It was one of the first housing associations in the country and provided decent, affordable housing for the workers migrating from the cities.
HCHA has always had a town centre location, and in 2009 moved to a brand new purpose built office in Norton Way South. The company celebrated its centenary from this location, marked by various celebrations and a collection of merged past and present photographs.
WGCHA was formed in 1961, exactly 50 years after HCHA, to provide high quality housing, predominantly for older people.
The main office, a grand building in the Georgian style of architecture, is located on Parkway and the view along this road to the south was once described as one of the world's finest urban vistas.
It is extremely fitting that HCHA and WGCHA have come together in 2020, the centenary year of Welwyn Garden City.
