Gary devoted a huge amount of his time and energy into Howard Cottage despite his many other commitments as a local Councillor. Gary leaves a huge legacy having been a Board Member from 1997 and then Chairman from 2013 until 2018. He was on the Board during some of the most significant Howard Cottage milestones including the move to Pioneer House in 2009 and the centenary in 2011.
As Chairman Gary was pivotal in the development of John Coxall Court, personally breaking the ground on its construction. It was so pleasing that he was able to see its completion when he visited the scheme last year. Gary also began the discussions with Welwyn Garden City HA that led to the creation of First Garden Cities Homes.
The phrase “people person” fitted Gary so well. He always had a smile and an easy-going relaxed style that put people at ease. Coupled with that was a witty and mischievous sense of humour that did not disguise his passion for the things that he loved and cared about, from his family to friends, colleagues, his local community, music, clothes, his Vespa and of course West Ham. Regularly reminiscing about 1966 – “the year West Ham won the world cup”.
After standing down from the Board Gary always maintained a close connection and interest in FGCH offering help when he could. We will miss his input, his wisdom, his help and advice but most of all we will miss his friendship.
Gary will be fondly remembered as part of the FGCH family of staff, residents and Board. Our thoughts are with his family.
Donations in Gary's memory are being gratefully received for Garden House Hospice
